SLOWDOWN Married so young and you can tell their love is still strong, His young family and their demands keep his back to the wall, You’re looking so tired, Jimmy boy, the dreams that you had, Are all washed away by the storms from the life that you’ve led. You got to slowdown Jimmy boy you’re going to fast, You’re gonna’ take a tumble off your bicycle son, Money’s so tight and times are so hard, But you gotta’ keep moving for the kids and the wife. (Repeat verse) A night with the girls, little Suzie your heads in a whirl, Just a few hours to dance, and you feel like your worlds gonna’ burst, Your heart skips a beat, with your handbags and gladrags you’re looking so sweet, Oh the players may change, but this scene from the drama of life stays the same…won’t you Slowdown Suzie you been dancing all night, To the boy in the corner with the glint in his eye, There’s no need to worry, don’t you fret your little head, Cos’ you done all your fishing now he’s caught in your net. (Repeat) Won’t you Slowdown, slowdown (Repeat) Guitar / Harp / Viola etc Well you don’t have to look far, not these days, To find someone who’s into the play, A mirror will do, cos’ we’ve all taken part in our own way, And I’m sick and tired, oh of seeing my people held the same way, So I’m getting out, I’m slowing right down, getting out, getting out of the rat race… You got to slowdown Jimmy boy you’re going to fast, You’re gonna’ take a tumble off your bicycle son, Money’s so tight and times are so hard, But you gotta’ keep moving for the kids and the wife. Slowdown Suzie you been dancing all night, To the boy in the corner with the glint in his eye, There’s no need to worry, don’t you fret your little head, Cos’ you done all your fishing now he’s caught in your net. You Oughta’ Burn The tramping down and ridicule, from your poisoned tongue and your iron rule, I’d spit in your face oh and how I’d smile, cos you oughta burn for a long, long time. You baited traps with people’s lives, dug your knife in deep in the back, of the unions spine, This country’s salt of the earth they got peppered by greed and lies, Oh you oughta’ burn, for a long, long time. (Chorus) Oh lord give me strength, to build me a fire, The biggest fire this country’s seen in a long, long time, And if I had my way, oh woman I’d curse your sign, And tonight you’d burn, for a long, long time. Now it’s dog eat dog, but then that’s your way, Cos’ whether we can or cannot well to you we’d still got to pay, And my granddad reared me up on these few lines, That the likes of you oughta’ burn, burn, burn for a long, long time. (Chorus) Oh lord give me strength, to build me a fire, The biggest fire this country’s seen in a long, long time, And if I had my way, oh woman I’d curse your sign, And tonight you’d burn, for a long, long time. Guitar / viola etc I’m gonna’ call me up the ghost of Robin Hood, I’m gonna ask him what to do with these here Poll Tax forms, And old Guy Fawkes he was of sound judgement and mind, Cos you really oughta’ burn, for a long, long time, Oh tonight you’d burn, for a long, long time, Oh you really oughta’ burn for a long, long time, time, time, time. Out Of The Blue A seasoned message from your silver tongue and you think that’ll do, Oh well, I ain’t heard from you in oh it’s gotta’ be months. We’ll meet for a drink next Saturday week, hey girl you gotta’ cheek, And oh no, the boys don’t meet down the ‘Dog & Bucket’ no more. I know your sister Jeanie has been blessed with twins, a boy and a girl that’s nice, But I don’t think we can take from were we left off. You’ve never been one to mince your words, ever since that night you burnt your bra, You do amaze me, the way you think your, above the rest cos’ you drink neat gin – (oh no, no not again). Don’t wanna’ hear of your college day’s and that you’re writing for its magazine, Or of the car that, your daddy bought, cos’ you got good grades in your exams this year – (oh no, no not again). (You’re so sure of yourself). The way you left when you went away with your head in the clouds, Well you’re no longer the centre of attention round’ hear. So I’ll wish you the best with your current success in reaching the top, Well we had a smile or two in our time but I’m afraid that’s the past. Now I gotta’ go now, cos’ my bath water is getting stone cold, Oh well, if I see you round’ then perhaps we’ll share a bottle or, If I see you round’ then perhaps we’ll share a bottle or, If I see you round’ – then perhaps we’ll share a bottle or two. WORDS (O’Dea) MUSIC (O’Dea / Cox). 1987.

My Sweet Rita Take your time now Rita girl, go put on your Sunday dress, You don’t scrub up too bad at all get rid of that factory dirt, We’ll go walking in the evening sun and we’ll sit there fir a while, I’ll undress you with my eyes, my hands won’t leave my side, Cos I just wish, to be alone with you. I try to be articulate, I’m quoting Brendan Behan by the score, I talk to you of theatre plays and of books that sound obscure, You’re listening to the new top ten, me I’m like some old stick in the mud, But then again White Man in Hammersmith Palais, Well it always did me good, And I just wish, to be alone with you. (Chorus) Oh my sweet Rita, with your apron and your carpet sweeper, Oh girl, you’ve never looked sweeter, And I just wish to be with you tonight. Get out the house now Rita girl, leave your sisters and brothers inside, Don’t go calling to your friends from work, just come sit here by my side, You know I haven’t got much time I’ve got to make the evening shift, So Rita won’t you come to my side before I miss my lift, And I just wish, to be alone with you, Chorus Repeat Oh tonight, oh tonight. Way Back Home Hello Molly hey how you doing? No you ain’t looking at a ghost, Standing dumbstruck you, drop your tea cup, and it smells like you’ve burnt the toast, What’s the tears for? Ooh what’s that fist for? Didn’t you get my note? Sure I wrote you, sure did miss you, help me off with my coat. I’m talking with the rhythm of the road in me, You don’t know how good it feels to say, I’m coming way back home, way back home. I saw old Brendan he’s still got that pick up, well I, gave the old fool a fright, He looked amazed when I shouted to him that he drove on through a red light, So now Molly hey what’s my chances? Have I got a foot in your door? What’s the work like here, what’s the beer like? Well I’m only joking my love. I’m talking with the rhythm of the road in me, You don’t know how good it feels to say, I’m coming way back home, way back home. Instrumental So now Molly can I stay a while here can I get a warm by your fire? I need to sit down and do me some thinking, oh girl I’m feeling so tired, I can’t believe how the old place has changed now, What a difference to see, I walked around here like someone insane now, Trying to plan my opening scene, I’m talking with the rhythm of the road in me, You don’t know how good it feels to say, how good it feels to say, I’m coming way back home, way back home, way back home.
